The Sydney Royal Schools Commercial Egg Laying Competition provides students with hands-on experience in commercial egg production through the care and management of six commercial egg-laying pullets supplied by the RAS.
Open to NSW schools with suitable poultry-keeping facilities, the curriculum-linked program allows students to develop practical knowledge of poultry care, commercial egg production and animal management. Participating schools raise the pullets at school before selecting their best three birds to exhibit at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
At the Show, the selected pullets, student project work and egg production are assessed by poultry industry experts. Through the competition, students gain an understanding of commercial egg production while applying their learning in a practical agricultural setting.

Commercial Egg Laying Competition Teacher's Manual
Competition Components
The competition is judged by poultry industry experts and consists of three components:
Presentation of Exhibits
Each school selects three pullets for exhibition and judging.
Birds are selected based on:
- Exhibition qualities
- Uniformity
- Fitness for showing
Project Component
Students create an A3 poster outlining how their pullets were raised and prepared for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The completed project is submitted via email.
Egg Laying Component
The eggs laid by the three selected pullets during the nine days of competition are assessed against commercial egg-production standards.
This component introduces students to the quality standards used within commercial egg production.
